Coldest Night of the Year - First Outing with the Leica M11P
Recently, there have been some good deals on used Leica gear and I opportunistically bought a Leica M11P + 35mm and 50mm Summilux lenses. As I’d already been using the Q2 for a number of years, I was intruiged by what the M offered.
The Coldest Night of the Year is an annual fundraising event run across the country for various charities. I’ve been involved with the Ottawa Mission homeless shelter for close to a decade now, being on the board of their Foundation. I took the opportunity to head out on this walk for a good cause, with my M11P + 50mm Summilux in hand.
I chose to shoot in Monochrome High Contrast. I usually do for a lot of this kind of walkabout photography - yes, I know, I should consider a Monochrome body. But this is what I have. :)
Because much of the time, I was walking with the head of the pack, I actually did not have any time to stop and focus. I ended up just setting up zone focusing: f5.6 -8, 3 meter distance, 1/250s, and just snap snap snap as I walked.
I found that it was hard to nail focus with the 50mm, especially with the massive 60mp sensor. I would snap a series of shots, then check and when zoomed in, the person’s face isn’t in focus. This is more a function of me being new to the M, and shooting moving subjects at the same time.
In closing, the event was successful, raising $195,139 for the Ottawa Mission. This is much needed in our community.
